The key insight here is that while the above picture may be true to describe what happens due to the presence of a large gravitational mass, it equally may not be true. All that is actually required is that radial geodesic paths around the gravitational mass are converging towards each other for whatever reason. A higher extra dimension to embed the space in which this is happening, as shown in Flamm’s Paraboloid, is not required to make this true.
